During the 13th-18th October Tristan da Cunha’s Marine Protected Zone Officer (MPZO) , Janine Lavarello attended the International Marine Conservation Congress (#IMCC7) in South Africa. Funded by the UK Government’s Blue Belt Programme, Janine presented Tristan’s ground-breaking approach to balancing community needs with marine conservation. This gathering brought together marine experts from across the globe, each sharing their insight, into protecting marine ecosystems. Tristan’s MPZO highlighted the unique work being done on the island, where conservation and community work hand-in-hand, underpinned by the success of the Marine Protected Zone (MPZ) and recently awarded Blue Park Award.

Tristan’s Blue Park Award Win and Community-Centered Conservation Efforts

This year, Tristan proudly received the Gold Blue Park Award, a recognition of the Tristan community’s commitment to protecting the  marine environment. For such a small and remote community, Tristan’s conservation efforts really stand out: establishing the largest no-take Marine Protection Zone in the Atlantic, covering an area of almost ¾ million km2 , demonstrating how a community-focused approach can make a powerful impact. Tristan’s team, Janine (MPZ Officer) and Andy Schofield (Tristan Environmental Officer & RSPB Territories Government Partner), also had the chance to meet with representatives of the Blue Park Foundation (@MarineConservationInstitute), who presented the award: Blue Marine Foundation (@Bluemarinef) and the Blue Nature Alliance (@BluNatAlliance), who have been key supporters in protecting Tristan’s waters through the Atlantic Guardians project.

Collaboration with Other UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs)

Tristan wasn’t alone in representing the UKOTs at IMCC7: the South Atlantic Territories of St Helena and Ascension Island also joined the Congress, each sharing their own conservation achievements. St Helena showcased the impact of its impressive Marine Protected Area (MPA), and Ascension Island shared insights into enhancing marine conservation through comprehensive research and monitoring efforts. Together, they emphasized the role that shared knowledge and resources play in ensuring the health of marine ecosystems across the South Atlantic.

Key Highlights from IMCC7

IMCC7 provided a platform for numerous experts to share innovative and inspiring conservation efforts. Some of my personal highlights included:

  • Dr. Judy Mann-Lang on Community Engagement
Dr. Mann-Lang emphasized that communities are both the biggest challenge and the most powerful solution in marine conservation. Her talk served as a reminder that conservation can only be successful when it resonates with and includes local communities, an approach which is very relatable to Tristan.

  • CoMMOn System for Microplastics Monitoring
The CoMMOn (Micro plastics Monitoring of Oceans) system is pioneering a new way to assess micro plastic levels across multiple countries, a crucial step towards understanding and addressing plastic pollution in marine environments.

  • AI-Powered Marine Surveillance and Tackling IUU Fishing
Leveraging artificial intelligence in marine surveillance has the potential to transform how we understand and regulate ocean activity. This technology is especially valuable in tackling IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing, helping to protect marine resources from exploitation.

These talks all stressed the importance of community and collaboration for effective marine conservation, echoing the values the Tristan community live by .

A Bright Future for Marine Conservation

The IMCC7 conference was a powerful reminder of the incredible work being done worldwide and the importance of partnerships in protecting our oceans. With the support of programmes like the UK Government’s Blue Belt (@ukgovebluebelt) and partnerships with organizations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) (@Natures_Voice), National Geographic (@NatGeo) & Blue Nature Alliance, Tristan da Cunha continues to demonstrate that even the smallest and remotest of communities can lead the way in marine conservation.

Together for Our Oceans

Conferences like IMCC7 are a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Tristan and other inspiring communities, as well as giving us a chance to strengthen existing partnerships and build new ones.

This gathering of conservationists, scientists, and community leaders was a celebration of a shared commitment to marine conservation. By collaborating and learning from one another, we are taking meaningful strides toward a sustainable and vibrant future for the oceans.
