Pristine oceanic islands like Tristan da Cunha are rich in…
Megan Elsmore, a non-resident Tristanian, is studying the fish in Tristan’s waters as part of her PhD at Aberystwyth University, in partnership with the Tristan Fisheries Department. 🐟🐠
The pristine, wildlife-rich near shore waters around Tristan are dominated by eight species of ...fish including Five finger (Nemodactylus monodactylus), Wrasse (Suezichthys ornatus) and Klipfish (Bovichtus diacanthus), which is found nowhere else in the world!
In August, Megan spent two months working with the Fisheries Department undertaking fish sampling and monitoring field work. 🛥
Megan hopes to provide data to help us better understand the diversity of fish life in Tristan’s waters. Her research findings should help to inform future marine management for fish.

Today is International Women’s Day and we’re celebrating a woman from Tristan da Cunha who has made a remarkable contribution to marine conservation! 🐋⛰
Marie Repetto has been recording whale sightings around the world’s most remote inhabited island of Tristan da Cunha for over ...a decade.
Marie has made a significant contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the whales and dolphins that use the waters around Tristan.
Marie said “Living on Tristan means I have the privilege of being able to whale watch from my house and my office! I love it! ...Making notes in my diary of my sightings just became a habit…”
