The Atlantic Guardians project helped the Tristan da Cunha community to build a solid foundation for our Marine Protection Zone.

The project ran from January 2021 until December 2025, developed and delivered in partnership by the Tristan da Cunha Government and the UK's Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), thanks to funding from Blue Nature Alliance.

Background to the Atlantic Guardians project

When the community of Tristan da Cunha established our Marine Protection Zone in August 2021, it was just the start of our journey.

Our MPZ has the potential to safeguard our pristine seas for the future of our community and our wildlife, but we knew it would only be effective if we could bring our whole community together to manage and enforce it. And that’s where the Atlantic Guardians project came in.

The name ‘Atlantic Guardians’ really sums up the role and identity of Tristan’s community as the protectors of the biggest no-take zone in this relatively unprotected ocean. At the heart of it is Tristan’s wildlife, spreading out from this remote hotspot across the entire Atlantic.

Aims

The aim of the Atlantic Guardians project was to support our community to understand, value and celebrate our MPZ now and into the future, as well as building our skills and expanding knowledge about our wildlife.

It was an ambitious and varied project, aiming to leave the people of Tristan well prepared to take care of our marine environment in a way that benefits the whole community, by using our marine resources in a sustainable way, and by promoting our visionary commitment to conservation.

Actions

The Atlantic Guardians project had four key strands, with many activities across these themes helping to ensure the success of our MPZ.
